Psychological Causes of Impotence and Its Common Treatments

Impotence is a good issue to tackle among men. Some regard it as an inevitable end to their sexual functioning whilst a few are optimistic that there is a cure to it. However, most men are unaware that the best treatment for impotence is the one that targets the root cause.

As a start, there are many known physical causes that can contribute to the condition but there are also many psychological causes that men often disregard. As opposed to physiologic impotence, the psychological classification often occurs suddenly. Although it is said that there is only about a tenth of all impotence cases that is attributable to psychological etiologies, still this must be put into consideration.

Some of the most common psychological factors or causes include the following:

  3. stress
  4. boredom and fatigability
  5. marital problems
  6. unresolved gay feelings

In low self-esteem, especially if the person has a previous experience of an unexpected episode of erectile dysfunction, he might think that he is no-good or incapable of an erection. This will lead to the feelings of pessimism wherein the man continually believes that he cannot function well, sexually.

In addition, did you know that stress and anxieties can trigger the release of chemical substances in the body called catecholamines? Yes, adrenaline is a very common example that is released during periods of the flight or fight response. Similarly clinical depression can lead to erection problems because a person taking some anti-depressant medications often experiences impotence as a side effect.

Moreover, being bored and fatigued depletes a man’s energy resource that is needed during sex. In the end, a man may seem slow to warm up or apathetic in sex because he always feels weak and unenergetic.

If the male partner also has some negative emotions against his wife, then this too can be a problem. Being angry towards his partner will evoke feelings of hatred that can prevent the man from ever having any sexual thought. Without sexual fantasies and the intimacy to perform sex, the husband will not achieve any form of erection.

There is also the presence of unresolved gay feelings that can hinder an individual from achieving an erection. If ever the man still doubts about his true sexuality then he will really have a hard time during sex. He may even feel disgusted when being in bed with a woman. This psychological cause will lead to guilt feelings that render him incapable of a successful sexual experience.

Therefore, to counter all of these psychological causes of impotence one must first target the real root cause. Although both psychological and physiologic impotence share almost the same treatment options, the psychological treatment approach is best for the impotence that is psychological in nature. For depression, the man must have an outlet to redirect his depression. He must also be optimistic towards sex. Stress and being too worked up must be avoided as well because some energy must be reserved for sex. Regain the intimacy and be involved in petting, foreplay and marital counseling. Lastly, be sure that you feel like a man or should I say, be a man! If you follow all of these then chances are you will have a satisfying sexual experience.
